Monday I usually talk about Copywriting, Storytelling and Body Language

Always with one goal close to my heart : to improve your skills in the Art of Convincing!

So, as it is possible that some of you might not know who Edward, even if its quite unlikely… I’ll start with a quick introduction : he is one of the main characters in a series of books adapted to the cinema under the title of Twilight. This is a story of Vampires with a rather nice story which led to a worldwide success of $ 3.3 billion in revenue. Edward is a vampire, the handsome golden boy type, in love with a human called “Bella.” Each vampire has a particular power and his is telekinesis which is the ability to read in your mind. He reads not only the intentions but also feelings of people.

…And of course except those of his girlfriend Bella. But that’s understandable, we might very well be all at the same level considering that, huh. Even if you are a psychology expert you most definitely cannot read throughout your closest friends or family. Too much affect, too many feelings and memories.

Wait a moment, Is it only even possible to read somebody’s mind ? Even without being a Vampire… theories are widely spread : we would only use 10% of the real capacities of our brain. If you believe that, everything becomes possible… by practising theses abilities, even a little bit each day, perhaps we could manage to recreate super powers like the ones we see in movies ?

Here are the 5 secrets that will allow you to read in the mind of the person you are thinking of right now. Don’t say no, if you are currently listening or reading this article, it’s because you might have someone you would love to convince about something. I called these elements “secrets” because they still very little taught in our Education through School and after despite you can easily access them if you search a bit… Lets stop for a moment : you have to realize these techniques are known by influencers, politics and powerful people, there is a reason why we don’t know more about it. Let’s imagine a wide range of the population would come to know psychology or communication techniques, whether someone lies to them or which feeling they are experiencing when they say something on the TV. Owww now you get it ! It is not easy anymore to fool the public opinion.

1. Before we dive deep into the way the mind works, let’s have a look at our bodies… which betrays them!

We know that there is verbal language (you speak, you exchange in writing or you send an audio to the person you are aiming to reach) which represents surprisingly only 30% of the whole communication.

On the other hand non verbal language (mostly called “the body language”) this time represent 70% of the exchanges. And often we are led to understand that this is mostly the gesture, or even the way we stand. It is indeed very short-sighted when you actually know the real complexity of a human being.

Imagine an inner self, some call it the soul, if it does not suit you think of an inner energy that burns from the inside looking for all the ways to be externalized. By all the pores of the skin but also by the emission of hormones, by the contraction of internal organs, words of bellies or head until the moistness of a tight hand in a given situation. And we summarize that just “gestures”. Puree, there is so much more!

2. Graphology and the fundamental need to learn to read people

I started to get interested in Science, Human Knowledge very early when I discovered a graphology book in the parenting library. I instantly found it fantastic to be able to guess up to 70% or 80% of a person’s entire personality without even having met him … just by looking at the curvature of his words, the inclinations of his writing .

It was almost magical for me and a fervent worshiper of science fiction and fantasy novels … I was hypnotized by this possibility. The magic of course was in the stories but … would it be possible through years of practice to develop so much quality, human skill to reproduce effects similar to magic?

After all in centuries past, it was often like that that magical legends were born. We started from a healer who was particularly talented and who must have discovered the properties of a special plant … And it was named Merlin and made it the greatest magician of all time. Well of course I take big shortcuts, but you understood the idea.

So I put myself like a Vampire to frantically drink the juice, the essence of all the grimoires that came within my reach and spoke of graphology. And gradually I came across the close books like Freud and his Interpretation of Dreams that I found as intelligent as the graphological approach … Gradually I began to form my opinion still current: in fact, even before studying, to train oneself, to become good at any other field … well, there must be a stage where we start by understanding people.

What good can it be to be a world-famous expert in nuclear fusion if in the end we are so stupid when it comes to human relations that everything we do is badly received? Even provokes sharp opposition? Would it not have been smarter to study in advance how human aspirations work? Showing empathy ? Understand that all the old scientists in nuclear fusion who have not discovered the theories presented will do everything to oppose these theories? Well yes, their ego takes a big hit … because on their side, in a lifetime of research, they have somehow failed to do the same. So rather than doing what would be smart and objective (ie warmly welcoming the finds of this scientist and trying to understand how he did it to inspire them) well … they make a barrage of opposition and – if the theory found is unassailable – begin to create the most smoky theories about the author of these, to discredit it, to roll it in the mud.

And while we had a brilliant nuclear fusion expert … who, by the way, is only interested in Science and moving it forward … We have a few years later a broken man coming out of the science circuit when he really would could be prolific and move the world forward. Would it not have been necessary rather to devote maybe even just one or two years before to study the Psychology and to manage to put in place a strategy aiming to certainly present its findings but while sparing the scientific establishment?

The cemeteries are filled with people who were “right”. Few have been both right and heard by the main stakeholders. Because for that it is necessary to know how to deposit one’s Ego and to take a plane to go up in the clouds of the human comprehension.

3. Psychology, criminology and especially Stylistics!

So here I am small becoming progressively tall and enrolling me in the Faculty of Psychology, well left for the 6 years that followed. And there … I learn in the first months that OH EFFROI! Graphology is not considered a science … Because it includes a possible part of error … people trained in the art of writing according to the rules of graphology can still cheat and transfigure their writing and therefore to build an entirely different personality. Damn, all my plans fall into the water. I will not be gone to become the greatest magician of all time?

And now comes the second year of license and I come across a course of an excellent psychology teacher and expert in criminology of the Nancy area who told me that certainly the graphology is not a science but another discipline, the “Stylistic” can achieve the same result and that, OH BONHEUR, it is a recognized science.

But what is Stylistics? Well rather than being interested in writing that can be counterfeit one is interested in the words used. Yes, the chosen terms which in fact transcribe the mental states, personality traits of the person. And since she is not aware of betraying herself because the words that come to her are like so many evidences for her … She would not see herself clearly speaking any other way … You know those moments when you write or you say something and you say “Oh no, I do not feel, that’s not me”

There for example the most insightful of you could take this text, these words that I am reading and studying them. And manage to establish a psychological profile of my personality quite acceptable by professionals, whether in the world of health, justice or law enforcement.

Boarf, there is always a way to cheat you tell me, just learn what words mean what and pay attention to what they say. The principle to really completely simplify (even too much) is when you want to ask someone something and you say “I want it” or “I want it”. Well, the principle is that “want” refers to a psychology reality and “I would like” to another.

Here I am once again imagining myself doing magic, putting on Dracula’s coat and flying in the air … Using my new stylistic weapon to hypnotize the humans I met and drink from their blood … leave a mark the most indelible possible on both sides of their neck … Yum!

Without being Twilight’s Edward Cullen you start to see that you can guess and even know what’s going on in everyone’s mind, and even know how they work to predict what they will do in the future.

4. Morphopsychologie, on se rapproche du cerveau !

Alors pour te rassurer si justement tu viens d’être transis d’effroi en repensant à toutes les lettres manuscrites (graphologie) ou les e-mails, les messages sur les réseaux sociaux (stylistique) que tu as pu envoyer… Non seulement il faut pas mal de contenu pour pouvoir faire une analyse pertinente (genre le cours de Psychologie qu’on avait sur ces domaines était sur un livre entier d’Amélie NOTHOMB) mais ce n’est pas non plus pris comme seul élément constitutif permettant de prendre un avis sur ta personnalité, en tout cas pour les professionnels. Suffit pas comme dans les magazines de faire un seul test pseudo-psychologique pour ENFIN avoir toutes les réponses…

Non par exemple en recrutement les grandes entreprises utilisent la graphologie (pas mal en France et surtout pour les postes à haute responsabilité) en demandant une lettre manuscrite… Et l’analyse qui en ressortira ne sera pris que comme un des dix éléments qui vont permettre au Directeur des Ressources Humaines (DRH) de prendre sa décision.

Tout comme la morphopsychologie qui est utilisée en recrutement, même si comme la graphologie elle n’est pas considérée comme une science exacte. La morphopsychologie, qu’est-ce que c’est ça ? C’est l’étude des particularités, des traits présents sur le visage. Et c’est une matière en laquelle je crois pour avoir rencontré et vu des morphopsychologues à l’oeuvre.

Le principe est que si vous êtes quelqu’un d’heureux, vous aurez donc tendance à davantage sourire que d’autres. Et si vous souriez mettons 30.000 fois par jour, eh bien par rapport à quelqu’un qui ne sourirait que 10.000 fois par jour… et ce reproduit mois après moi, années après années… vous imaginez le nombre de sourires que ça représente. Et forcément, comme tout muscle que vous actionnez davantage que d’autres eh bien il se met à grossir, durcir, changer son aspect. Et votre visage se modèle progressivement pour inscrire les événements lourds de votre passé qui ont impliqué d’importantes réactions.

Je ferai d’autres contenus pour explorer davantage ces techniques. Mais sachez que sans encore être un Vampire, en regardant le visage (et je ne vous parle pas des yeux !) de la personne en face de vous… vous pouvez connaître les grandes tendances qui ont et qui traversent sa vie. Voir s’inscrire ses réactions comme un livre ouvert car là encore c’est tellement difficile même quand on connaît de gommer ses réactions… qu’avec un peu de patience on parvient toujours à voir clair.

5. M’en fous, moi, j’veux être Édward et pi’ c’est tout !

Franchement, je comprends. Rien que voir l’hystérie de certaines, je comprends. C’est pas non plus les Beatles ou Led Zeppelin mais il est bien parti pour occuper le mur de nombreuses chambres en poster. Est-il donc possible de lire dans les pensées et comment faire ?

Dans le sens où ce ne sont pas les manifestations, les synapses qui construisent une pensée mais le contraire… Il apparaît pour les technologies dont on dispose actuellement très difficile de le faire. On pourra au mieux observer via des machines les aires du cerveau qui s’activent et donc connaître les grands thèmes de réflexion ou les émotions suscitées… Mais obtenir le détail des pensées comme si nous étions aux manettes de la personne non, pas possible.

Par contre de nombreux mentalistes sont devenus maîtres pour déchiffrer le langage non verbal et deviner ce qui est pensé. Vous ne pourrez pas savoir ce que pense la personne de vous mais vous pourrez deviner la carte Roi de Coeur ou le chiffre qu’elle a en tête. Ici sur cette chaîne je ne ferai pas de mentalisme, je ferai plutôt des techniques de psychologie scientifiquement prouvées pour la plupart et en tout cas dûment éprouvé sur le plan professionnel. Notre but n’est pas de deviner ce qui se passe dans l’esprit de la personne mais la comprendre assez… voire les réactions que nos mots produisent… pour pouvoir déployer l’Art de la Convaincre et au final faire adopter le comportement que l’on souhaite à la personne à laquelle tu penses.

Bien sûr toujours dans son intérêt et ensuite dans le nôtre, car la vérité, quelles que soient les techniques employées, finit toujours par triompher !

Every wednesday I talk about Psychology, Persuasion and the Art of Convincing anyone you aim to target. Today I will talk about a thing that hit me hard when I watched the latest Star Wars Movie about Han Solo. And I must stop here to tell you that if you do not know or never watched any Star Wars you shall stop right there and leave. You and I we won’t be able to go along, that’s a fucking shame because I felt it quite right between us, it started good but you destroyed everything. Really mate, go away and go back to your place. Start by opening your favourite TV show platform and go fucking watch Star Wars. No kiddin you really should, your life will surely be better !

More seriously, I had a moment of lucidity watching Solo in the movie theatre. This charismatic captain of the well known Millennium Falcon always with his pal Chewbacca.

Charismatic he sure is. But despite this… his personality is harsh, bold, unpleasant and pessimistic. However he is the one that got the beautiful Princess Leia at the end. And Leia that’s something !

To me persuasion brings a lot of seduction on the table. In true, we look to bring a person or a group of people that we targeted to do whatever the heck we decided they were going to do… And in order to do that we should succeed to :

  • to put them at ease

  • to catch their attention, to make them like us

  • let them fall for us, hoping to reach the finish line and make love in beautiful landscapes of Naboo, in the most gentle Jedi light saber way and with the tongue expertise of Jar Jar Binks

Then how the… Han Solo made it ? How did he get the hottest and hardest girl to get ? Despite the fact they were a lot of younger and more handsome captains surrounding him at the Rebellion ? It meets a stereotype we all have : that in order to seduce the person we want to be with we must become the kind Prince charming , go and get flowers and chocolates. That is the stupidest idea I ever heard, for real. And when you think about it for a second, that becomes obvious. At school and during all our childhood we all witnessed that hot girls were looking for bad boys. They were into danger, bullshit situations… And true loyal and interesting boys had to watch, powerless.

Later on some of these Princess dreams of flowers and chocolates get back but only for a short period of time… They even marry sometimes the one who does these things. The heartbreaker is that most of the time and after a period of time, short or long, depending on the situation… The girl leaves with another one, funnier, a little bit more good looking… But instead proposing no plans, just adventurous experiences.

1. Attention (first “I” of A.I.D.A.)

So why do we continue to explore techniques that failed many times in front of us ? Why playing the Prince charming, the flowers and the chocolates ? Han Solo he doesn’t give a glance at flowers, and chocos… He simply does not know what it is. Instead he spends all his time during every Star Wars movie to be unpleasant, rude and push the Princess to the limits. He makes her feel she is far from being the privileged Princess whom everyone adores and obeys for him. And did you observe Léïa’s reaction? Rather than fleeing, she responds to these indirect attacks, she plays her game and when she succeeds in doing things that displease Han Solo … She lets him know quickly and clearly. In fact, the two are dredging, the two are attracted as fuck, they can not even separate for too long as the game they are playing gets captivating by the minute… One wanting to prove to the other that he can beat the hell out of him or her… Dominant / dominated, the waltz begins and the music last for the eternity.

We must remember that Léïa still has everything to loose and has every reason to not want to spend any further time in the presence of Solo. She comes from a wealthy family with an Intergalactic Senator, yes, just that … And at the beginning she stays only because she is forced to stay in the ship of this unscrupulous Pirate that is Solo (Bastien if you hear me… et caetera et caetera !) who is constantly fleeing the biggest bandits in the galaxy.

Yet Léïa gets to be attracted by the Bad Boy Han Solo, enter his game and refuse to leave and be reasonable. Considering marketing, we would talk about the technique of “push and pull”. That is to say that as soon as the person is interested, we have to remove the product from her side creating the envy (for example by showing him the price) PUSH … then when he recoils considering the price which begins to dissuade him to go further, we might tell him “No, but wait I’m super nice and just for today I make 30% off just for you …” PULL suddenly he starts to return to the marketer who takes the opportunity to rebalance conditions, entry barriers, last minute criterias to finally get the product… then reproduce the technique until in the end the critical mind and the defense mechanisms of the target completely fall apart.

The push and pull is just another form of the dance, of the seduction waltz. You know it like me, we have never been so in love and desperate to obtain the object of your desire … that when it seemed to escape us … The ease, the assured happiness, the safety is far from being what we are looking for. A fucking stereotype, that’s what it is. We are looking for adventure, passion, a hectic life that will allow us at the end to say: I had a hell of a ride !

2. The interest

But that’s not enough. The princess, once Han Solo is taken by bandits and put in the fridge… she could have easily walk out of the game, but instead she sticked to it. She would totally be entitled to seek for a more suitable husband, a man that deserves her given her rank and her aspirations. And yet, she remains, even as she won the game with Han Solo. In your opinion, how is it even possible ?

Once the first phase of “get her attention”, is established, Solo went to the second stage: to arouse the real interest of the one he had caught in his nets. When the princess was in deep wookie shit, imprisoned by the big bad guys… Well the bad boy Solo did not think twice, he came to the rescue of Leia. The exact same he kept repeating he couldn’t stand.

Yeah you might opposed me that he’s a mercenary, he might do it for the galactic credits. Or even to put it behind the ear of the princess (French personal expression) to show her that he is the strongest. Back in the game maybe ? But that theory my friends doesn’t stand a chance when you know that at the end, Solo invest himself for real in the Resistance. He even becomes one of the most famous and crucial elements.

Let’s keep it simple : Solo, he saw a girl that gets under his skin and he did as any human who knows how to do it would do it : he gave himself the means to deserve the price he was going for. After having caught her attention he aroused her interest.

He proved to her that despite his opinions, his interests or even his security, Solo was ready to risk everything to come and save her. And that is something not a lot of Senators or rich people in “Leïa’s world” would have done and show so much bravery. Solo gets more and more interesting as the time goes by. Leïa knows she can count on him and she starts to not be able to do it without Solo.

Whatever what made Solo the Han Solo we know or by analogy the color or the price of a product you want to sell … You have just built a huge perceived value : trust. Which represents a lot for anyone looking for the best thing.

And there Solo he also understood an crucial point of the Art of Convincing people : to get under the skin of someone, you must be ready to lose it. So yes you will lose a lot on the way at first… and then you will realize the more you send away the more it will come back… They will run towards you having in mind that they have to prove themselves, they deserve what they want and here it is Jackpot, it’s party time, Chewbacca starts to move his fur on a Michael Jackson song…

We came from a relationship where it was difficult to even have the attention or the respect of a Princess … you now have instead a normal person who is ready to do everything to deserve our love, our time and all that we could give him … we have been able to bring her to the point we wanted : the desire part.

3. The desire

You nearly made it all the way but you must not take if for granted. You hold her in your hand and she is ready to do a lot. But only to a certain point. You’ll notice that desire is an intrinsically sexual notion: we desire the object of our envy and we switch to a sentimental point of view.

Our thinking is completely falling asleep, disappearing in the limbo of the Force. We abandon ourselves, we are almost hypnotized, in a second state and if there is no element coming to remind us of the reality (for instance forgetting the little kiss at the right time, or for example that the price of a product is really disproportionate compared to the perceived value…) well people, everything is going well for now

And to get right to what interests you the most… knowing if Léïa and Solo did it keeping the light on or not… Remember that the more you spent doing the foreplay… Which is here the first stage, the Attention, allowing us then to get to the second part Interest… The more you will have ensured the success… The more your partner, your target, your customer will be in heavens and accept the dark side

Desire is something that must be taken care of, cuddled, protected. It takes time to emerge, but if you are aiming for the ultimate desire, the one who consumes the person until he can no longer make a reasoned decision… that one… takes time. And it can fall completely apart as quickly. Fuck, it would be a shame to miss the thing after doing half of the Universe and escaping from the Death Star isn’t it?

Stop there. Realize how far we’ve came… Because now is the time. You finally can use the usual techniques you know about psychology, marketing and persuasion. And I strongly advise you to not do them before this state because you will meet strong defenses against them. But now the person is mature, it is a fertile ground and it is up to you to choose the good seed that will produce the natural environment in which you want it to evolve in the future. Yes, because you are smarter than others since you are training, educating, reading and listening to me… So you have a long-term vision and you want to create a world, a unique universe in which the person or the group of people you are targeting will not only register but return, again and again.

Here are soome examples of techniques that you could implement: you could include quotes from famous people in your pitch… in order to gain even more legitimacy. And if you really want to knock down all her defenses, you might even use an old trick : to bring these quotes by saying that it is not you who say them, it is one of your friends who brought them to you recently… Like this the possible aggression, the defense mechanisms will have no target and will quickly fall. An idea is more acceptable when it comes from a third party. An old trick told again and again for GrandPa’ Obiwan Kenobi.

4. Action

And what about orgasm then? Yeah, I am sure you will forgive me for this joke, I could not help myself. We geared up, we nearly reached to point of non return, we are close to orgasm but now we have to take action, this is the 4th and last step.

We know now with the movies Rogue One and Solo… Leïa and Solo did not just have fun with the lightsaber, they kissed both sides of the Force and they released us a nasty Sith knight who fucked the all thing down. In a few words, they took action, they had a result.

To convince just for the sake of convincing is a strong mistake. Because you may have managed to superbly build your thing all the way, changed even the way the person understand the world but if you do not concretize the idea by the action, she will feel frustration.

And you know what it means when she’s frustrated… you’re going to get a hell of a lot of a ride, she will try to make you pay and not in a kind way of dealing with things ahah

Especially since several psychological phenomena enter the game at this time : loyalty or the theory of commitment … But the article, the video, the podcast begins to be a little long I’ll talk about it later. I am tired of seeing stereotypes such as if in order to convince a population to think otherwise you had to start one by one. I’m quite frankly sick of hearing such nonsense. On a scale of one to ten, this strategy might rank at two or three. And yet we keep hearing it repeatedly by politicians, opinion leaders. Precisely when they use other techniques themselves. Like “make sure to do what I say and not what I do.”

You must at least have seen once leaders yelling at young members in political meetings to : “go occupy every street, pull, talk to your friends, to your family and you will start a wave that cannot not stopped” . Confusing isn’t it ? For those who have already had someone within their family convinced or politically committed …. You know what I mean…

It doesn’t matter: at each family dinner or evening with friends, the person at some stage talk about the cursed subject. And as soon as there is a new person around the table who just answers him politely … He takes it for an encouragement and it goes on and on for hours to bring out again and again the same arguments. Do you really think this method will convince largely people ? For real ?

Lets also speak about the leaflets widely distributed in the streets. The known figures are only 1% of success. Why do leaders, who know these numbers, send their troops in what looks like a tremendous waste of energy? We leave in the twenty first century with social media all the time at arms reach. How could this situation continue ?

1. The reasons of the decision makers revealed

You come to understand or at least realize “we are not told everything”. There is necessarily a better explanation. To mislead the masses of volunteers… an explanation must exists. Indeed and by several psychological theories.

First of all, that when you constantly explain and re-explain the same thing, you end up not only improving your speech through practice, becoming more convincing but also and above all: becoming more convinced yourself. Well yes, as much at the beginning we could be hot way to defend an idea … But by having to answer questions, often quite aggressive because we still disturb people in the street … well we have to ask ourselves in big defender of the idea. In short, the leaders know very well what they do, they use dark magic coupled with smart marketing. And they on their side they make the real techniques that can offer compelling content on a large scale.

2. The technique of proof by the example of Gary VAYNERCHUCK’s Portkey

For those who do not know, Gary is one of the biggest vloggers in the United States (VLOG = VIDEO + BLOG, he films himself a lot of his days and gets quality content that posts videos on Youtube) . Gary realized there is no point in breaking down walls that will be rebuilt as soon as builders get the chance. It is better to act intelligently: that is to say, to push doors already open.

Gary spent about ten years defending around him the emergence of social networks even though at the time nobody believed. Rather than brewing the wind in front of people on their positions he chose to “let it be said” and prove by the story turning in his favor and taking care to document the times when he predicted what would happen.

He often talks about a meeting with big wine merchants (a former family business he had) where he sparked a general laugh when he announced that he was going to launch a “website” to sell wine … And to hear that it was ridiculous, that nobody would buy wine online, that his project was doomed to failure.

And now that the events have as you know exploded to his advantage … It is enough for him to show the contents of this period to silence any opposition.
